Overtime Question

My company started to really crack down on any overtime, and they have gotten into the practice of shaving hours on Friday if there is any overtime during the week; i.e. If I have an hour of overtime, I'll just be told to come in an hour later than my start time on friday so my week is only 40 hours.

Does anyone know the legality of this practice? I wasnt able to find any information about doing something like this but it just doesnt seem right.. Any help would be appreciated!
