OT Pay temporary position

Hello - I worked 9 weeks in a temporary position, on my last paycheck I worked 4.5 hours of OT which were paid at the straight time rate. These hours were approved by the company I was contracted to. I was told that since I was a "contract" worker that they did not have to pay the OT rate. All wages were paid on a W-2 basis.

My thinking is that I was an EE of ABC Agency contracted to XYZ Corporation and should be paid the OT rate.

Have you ever heard of this and is it true?

Thank you
