you are going to have to go to each individual state, set up/register business presence and request and employer ID. Each state can have a different process. How many and which states are you doing business or have employees in?

  • A state tax ID enables you to pay your state business taxes as well as withhold state income taxes from employee paychecks if your state has an income tax. This tax ID serves as a unique identifier for your business in tax filings and is similar to a federal employer identification number.
    Tax ID Purpose:
Many states have income taxes, and a state tax ID serves as an identifier for your business, enabling you to withhold the proper amount in state and local taxes from your employees' payroll checks. You may also use it when paying property taxes and any other business-related taxes as well as your business's state income tax. You'll also need a state tax ID to collect both state and local sales tax.
    Considerations:
If you don't have any employees or make retail sales, your state might not require you to have a state tax ID. Many small businesses are sole proprietorship and file their taxes individually so might not need state tax IDs. However, some states require all businesses to have state tax IDs, so check local laws or consult with an attorney specializing in business law.
