What do I need to do to properly set myself up as a gig economy worker?

According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are more workers in the gig economy than the entire information sector. With this in mind, how can gig economy workers be sure they are abiding by the appropriate protocols when it comes to payroll taxes?

Comments

  • The same as with any worker who is not in the "gig" economy. The rules have not changed significantly since 1938.

    • Are these workers being treated as independent contractors or as employees?
    • Are they being paid via cash or check?
